SYNOPSIS: Fleeing to Russia Ethelwulf clashes with his superiors & escapes to the Byzantine Empire. Here he unwittingly makes enemies in high places, finally losing his followers, and alone passes on to the climax of his 20-year wanderings in Jerusalem in 1000.
EXTRACT: ''..welcome back our heroic - our ever-victorious captain?' sneered the drunken Rus, leaning so close to Ethelwulf that alcoholic fumes poured into his face. Ethelwulf recoiled and stepped back; Thorgeis turned and laughed at his audience. 'Wait till that crafty Greek governor tells you what he's done to your precious Morkere - ' He said no more as Ethelwulf's left fist thumped into his stomach. As Thorgeis slumped forward, badly winded and his face reddened, Ethelwulf seized his belt and pitched him straight into the sea."
EXAMPLE OF AN END-NOTE: "494 abu-Ali Mansur al-Hakim (996-1021), the child of a Christian slave & the Fatimid caliph, murdered viziers, destroyed churches (including that of the Holy Sepulchre in 1009) & persecuted non-Moslems. Finally, absorbing the Ishmaelite beliefs, he announced he was the incarnation of God, being revered by the Druzes, before being assassinated in 1021."
